Romantic Russians

The first concert of the 2018 – 2019 Calgary Civic Symphony season will showcase the outstanding local talent of internationally recognized Calgary pianist (and periodontist) Thomas Yu as he joins the orchestra in presenting Rachmaninoff’s most celebrated piano concerto – Piano Concerto No. 2.

Thomas Yu is one of the most recognized amateur musicians in the world. He has redefined what it means to be an amateur pianist, having performed with the BBC Orchestra of Wales, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. He has appeared as a guest soloist at Berliner Philharmonie, Carnegie Hall, Munich Gasteig, BBC Hoddinott Hall, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Symphony Hall in Chicago, Hakuju Hall in Tokyo, as well as Roy Thomson Hall, National Arts Centre and Glenn Gould Studio in Canada. He continues to delight audiences across four continents while maintaining a full-time career as a periodontist.

The Civic opens its 2018 – 2019 season with Romantic Russians on Sunday, October 28 at 2:30 pm at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. The pre-concert chat will commence at 1:45 pm.

Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts the Civic as we launch the concert performing the Rowson Fanfare: A Sesquie for Canada’s 150th, followed by the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring Thomas Yu. After our brief intermission, the concert will be brought to a close with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
We are also pleased to announce that the Russian Folk Choir “Razdolie” will be featured in our pre-concert performance beginning at 1:45 pm.

The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant!
