Below are interesting articles written about Calgary's downtown core.
How walkable is your neighbourhood?
October 9, 2011 / source: Calgary Herald
“I don’t drive very much,” says Peters, 35, working in her yard on a sunny afternoon. “I just like being close to work downtown without having to drive and the river paths around here are excellent.”
Peters lives in what’s considered to be one of Calgary’s most “walkable” neighbourhoods, the kind of place where she can live much of her life without a car.
That may seem a rare thing in Calgary, a relatively young North American city largely engineered for the automobile.
Few seemed shocked when this year’s civic census revealed 70 per cent of Calgarians drove alone on their most recent trip to work.
But a survey for the Herald’s Project Calgary suggests many people want to live like Peters. [read more]
Snow means no street parking
October 5, 2011 / source: Calgary Herald
City council has OK'd a snowfall parking ban to clear clogged streets, but the Calgary Downtown Association worries it will hurt businesses.
On some 1,000 kilometres of major and neighbourhood streets, a decent-sized snowstorm will mean a 72-hour ban on parking, and the city has proposed the same on all downtown avenues, as well. [read more]
Move to impose snowstorm parking ban a step closer
September 21, 2011 / source: Calgary Herald
The city will temporarily lose thousands of curbside parking spots but gain much faster, more efficient snow plowing if aldermen next month adopt parking limits during snowstorms, city officials predict.
A council committee took the first step Tuesday by unanimously supporting the roads department's plan for 72-hour parking bans along major roads and bus routes when the city declares a "snow event."
It would briefly eliminate 15 per cent of all curbside parking in the city. [read more]

Looking to park downtown? Online service shows you where
August 26, 2011 / source: Calgary Herald
In the long days of summer when the weather is fine and many are on holiday, it seems like no problem to find a spot in a downtown parkade.
But come winter, cold snaps will cause a rush of motorists to seek shelter for their vehicles and parkades can soon hit capacity.
To help drivers find a spot, the Calgary Parking Authority has launched a new website that gives real time information on availability in its seven innercity parkades. [read more]

August 17, 2011 / source: Calgary Herald
When Brendan Bankowski looks at a map of the city to determine where to park his Perogy Boyz food truck each day to sell gourmet dumplings, he sees a lot of choice.
"Where you can go is 95 per cent of the map," said Bankowski. "There's a lot of places we can go."
But the conditions and guidelines established for the food truck pilot program include some specific prohibitions on where the city's eight new mobile cuisine stands can and can't operate. [read more]

“There’s not much there,” says Chris Alig, co-chair of the Calgary Pathways and Bikeways Advisory Council (CPAC) of the long awaited strategy. “They have this goal of becoming a premier cycling city, but the bit between… isn’t going to deliver that.” [read more]

Sociale, The Lougheed Building
February 4, 2011 / source: Swerve Calgary
On the evening of February 11, 1915, a downtown hotspot was poised to get even hotter. Angered that "alien labour" was taking jobs away from patriotic Canadians during the First World War, soldiers threatened to demolish Cronn's Rathskeller unless the establishment's Teutonic name ( "rathskeller" is German for a restaurant in the basement of a city hall, not a plea to call a rat catcher) was removed from the electric sign outside the Lougheed Building. A head chef to write HOME about
February 3, 2011 / source: FFWD Weekly
It’s Wednesday night and we’re driving downtown for dinner at Stephen Avenue’s latest hot spot, HOME Tasting Room. Usually downtown Calgary is a ghost town on weekdays, but not tonight. Between a Flames game and theatre season, Stephen Avenue is in full swing — and parking is not fun. You’ve been forewarned.
Arriving at HOME, we discover a large room. Even though the room is one-third full, it feels empty in comparison to the size of the space. Based on the name, I was hoping for a cozier, more intimate setting. But like any review night, we’re not here for the room — we’re here to see what HOME is serving up. [read more]

Time to taste downtown lifestyle
November 27, 2010 / source: Calgary Herald
For many Calgarians, the holiday season is one of the few times they venture downtown.
Maybe they're doing some Christmas shopping -- yes, there are some gifts you can only find downtown -- or perhaps attending a spouse's holiday party at a signature downtown hotel or the Calgary Convention Centre.
Maybe it's an annual family outing, such as the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra's Christmas concert, Theatre Calgary's A Christmas Carol, or Alberta Theatre Project's Seussical The Musical.
For many suburbanites, it is an opportunity to get a taste of what living downtown might be like.
I encourage Calgarians who haven't been downtown for awhile to check it out over the holiday season. [read more]

There may come a day when all of Calgary's historic sandstone buildings are converted into restaurants. It seems to be a natural and appropriate progression for the structures. We like dining surrounded by the rugged, historic warmth of sandstone and we appreciate restaurateurs who help preserve some of Calgary's history.
And, as of a few weeks ago, we can chalk up another sandstone-restaurant conversion. The former Ashdown's Hardware at 110 Stephen Ave. S.W. is now known as Home Tasting Room (403-262-8100). [read more]
