| | Time: - / Location: Glenbow Museum, 130 9 Ave SE July 7, 2012 The 1912 Calgary Stampede. There was no midway and there were no horse shows. But there was a rodeo and the artwork of Charlie Russell. Known then as the Famous Cowboy Artist, Russell created art that connected deeply with ranchers and cowboys in the West. His \"Special Exhibition\" of 20 paintings was a huge draw at the first Calgary Stampede.
Glenbow is pleased to celebrate the Stampede\'s centenary by recreating this 1912 exhibition, which will include 18 of the 20 paintings exhibited in 1912. From Russell\'s glorious western landscapes and \"heroic\" depictions of First Nations (Stolen Horses) to some of his most famous action paintings featuring cattle (Heads and Tails), cowboys (In Without Knocking and Smoke of the \"45\") and outlaws (Call of the Law), this exhibition is truly a once in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of the best works painted by this iconic western artist.
Heralded as \"a magnificent collection of western pictures\" in 1912, Russell\'s exhibition was incredibly successful, both critically and financially. Today, Russell scholars and collectors are already anticipating the return of this special exhibition to Calgary.

| | Time: 09:00 am - 09:00 pm / Location: 277 Barclay Parade SW calgary July 7, 2012 The Festival will display Turkish art, folk dance, music and gourmet food, where visitors will get an opportunity to celebrate, learn, and savour Turkish hospitality, culture, heritage and cuisine.
Visitors will be able to browse and buy Turkish products, souvenirs and handcrafts, participate in activities for children, view many authentic demonstrations and performances, sample Turkish cuisine, and do much, much more at the Festival.
The world famous Turkish doner was the center piece of the Turkish Kitchen, served to over 4000 people. The stage was busy with Turkish folklore, music, dances and lovely Turkish songs. From handcrafts to pottery, jewelry to carpets, marbling to calligraphy, Turkish coffee to baklava, it was as if the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul was brought to Calgary. Kids were also having fun at their corner with moonwalk, face painting, crafts, portraits, and of course cotton candy and popcorn.
This wonderful event effectively brings Turkey to Calgary, showcasing a rich cultural heritage while allowing visitors to sample fine Turkish cuisine from sumptuous kabobs to mouth-watering pastries. This year, like last, the Festival will be alive with the sights, sounds and aromas of Turkey. Visitors are encouraged not to come to the festival alone, but to bring their family, friends, and neighbors, too. Come and sample authentic Turkish food and pastries while enjoying original Turkish-style doner-kabobs, tantuni- kabobs, shish-kabobs and famous pita-style sandwiches, along with gozleme and bazlama, featuring tasty, lightly spiced chicken or beef.
Taste the most delectable delights this side of Istanbul, along with authentic Turkish salads and a wide variety of other meals and baked goods. In addition, this year's Festival will feature unique and fascinating demonstrations of distinctive traditional Turkish crafts, such as paper marbling by Ebru Sanati, and carpet weaving. Truly, this is a day not to be missed, explosion of taste and culture in the heart of the summer, in the heart of Calgary. Website: www.CalgaryTurkishFestival.com |
